5 Workout Acronyms You Might Not Know

OMG, lol, brb, ttyl! Have you ever been walking through the gym and heard an acronym that made you go wtf?!

Don’t worry, it’s not just you!

Personally, I love a good acronym! But there are SO many out there, and it gets hard to keep up; so here is a quick roundup of some popular acronyms for your next workout!

  1. HIIT

How it sounds: hit

What it means: High-Intensity Interval Training

How it’s used: HIIT sessions are high-intensity cardio training, where there will be a period – or interval – of work time followed by an interval of rest time. For example, your HIIT session may start out with 20 seconds of jumping jacks, followed by 10 seconds rest or recovery, then 20 seconds jump squats, followed by 10 seconds rest or recovery; and so on and so forth for the duration of the exercise.

  1. EMOM

How it sounds: E mom

What it means: Every Minute On the Minute

How it’s used: EMOM trainings are another form of cardio training. With EMOMs, the goal is complete a set number of reps (usually ~10) on a few exercise moves (typically anywhere from 3-6) within a 60 second period. If you finish all reps of all moves before the 60 second mark, any “leftover” time is spent holding a plank position until the minute is up.

  1. PR

How it sounds: P R

What it means: Personal Record; also PB – Personal Best

How it’s used: Just like the name indicates, a PR is your own record of achievement for a particular workout. This can be expressed in markers such as weight (125lb bench-press PR), number of reps (75 rep crunch PR), or time (7:38 mile PR).

  1. AMRAP

How it sounds: am rap

What it means: As Many Reps As Possible

How it’s used: AMRAP training involves repeating a certain exercise move at the same weight or speed until your body fatigues and can no longer complete a full repetition with proper form. AMRAP training can also include trying to complete as many repetitions as possible within a certain time period (i.e., do as many air squats as you can in 20 seconds).

  1. 1-RM

How it sounds: one R M

What it means: One Repetition Max

How it’s used: 1-RM is the maximum weightload you can move through one full range of motion for the specified workout. Be careful trying to find your own 1-RM without a personal trainer – or at least a spotter who can lift more than you!

So there ya have it, folx! I hope this list helped you to feel more up to speed on common gym rat lingo. Make sure to keep an eye out for our next installment of 5 Fitness Acronyms you might not know!

the fitness cult Mission Statement

A company’s mission statement is so important – it is very telling of the company culture, priorities, and values, and presents a very clear picture of what to expect as a client.

“I will not be beat. I will never give up. I am on a mission. That is the Michael Scott guarantee.”

I launched the fitness cult out of my one-bedroom apartment shortly after becoming certified for independent practice as a personal trainer. I’d been in the fitness industry for years and tried joining a few different corporations as a trainer, and I knew from first-hand experience as a trainer and as a client that there were gaping holes in the fitness industry, particularly for women!

That’s why I decided to take this major leap and create my own personal training business; where I could call the shots and dictate the culture and treatment for my clients. My partner and I joke that the fitness cult is my (our) baby, but it really has been an enormous labor of love to create a space that I saw was so severely lacking in the industry.

I truly value fitness – not only for its health benefits, but also as the activity itself, not to mention the myriad of other benefits it can represent. I wanted to take my passion and appreciation for fitness and manifest it in a community full of diversity, encouragement, and fun! These values are absolutely paramount to me and to my business, our culture, and our clients; and with that, I crafted our mission statement:

the fitness cult is all about enriching the lives of our community and making fitness fun through a balance of passion and encouragement.

It is my biggest wish that you experience that passion, encouragement, balance, and – of course – fun with every single workout, group class, challenge, and program you accomplish with us! I believe that fitness is for everyone, and take great pride in creating workouts and programs designed with you specifically in mind to meet your goals and complement your lifestyle.

A workout should not be a punishment; 40 minutes of torture for daring to have a body that does not match the photoshopped and airbrushed images we are spoonfed as a society. A workout is an opportunity to connect with your body and honor it, and in that, you honor yourself. You only get one body afterall (in this dimension, anyway), and should be free to celebrate it and nurture it through movement.

If any of this resounded with you, I would love to continue the conversation and to talk with you about your goals! Please feel free to comment on this post or reach out to me personally anytime at kailey@the-fitness-cult.com. the fitness cult would not be the amazing space that it is without our amazing community, and I so cherish each and every one of you!
